  4. What is Public Folder?
  5.  
  6. Public Folder is a network file transfer and file sharing system.  It allows
  7. anyone to make files and folders of files available to other users attached to
  8. an AppleTalk network.  These files and folders, stored in a special folder
  9. called the Public folder, can be seen and fetched by anyone on the AppleTalk
  10. network that is also using Public Folder.

  12. Public Folder works with all flavors of AppleTalk including LocalTalk,
  13. PhoneNet, EtherTalk, and TokenTalk.

  16. Getting Started

  18. Public Folder consists of a single file called an RDEV file.  Its user
  19. interface can be accessed through the Chooser desk accessory (this is similar
  20. to the way you choose printers on an AppleTalk network ).

  22. To get started with Public Folder simply copy it into your system folder and
  23. create a folder on your main disk called "Public" (NOTE: not "Public Folder"). 
  24. Make sure that AppleTalk is turned on, then restart your machine.

  26. Any files placed into your Public folder will be accessible by anyone on your
  27. network and you will be able to access files placed into other Public folders.

  30. Using Public Folder

  32. The customize button in the Chooser lets you customize your Public Folder. 
  33. You can change the default folder name from "Public" to anything you'd like. 
  34. Likewise, you can change your Public folder's name on the network from the
  35. Chooser name (the default) to anything you'd like.  Using these features
  36. allows you to set up multiple Public folders on your machine.  For example,
  37. you could set up two Public folders on you machine using two copies of the
  38. Public Folder file.  The first one could use the default setup, it would be
  39. identified as "John Doe".  The second could refer to a folder called
  40. "HD20:Latest Artwork Collection" with the Custom name "Latest Artwork".

  43. Disabling Public Folder

  45. If you wish not to have Public folder installed when you startup your
  46. Macintosh you can hold down the SHIFT key during startup.  The regular Public
  47. Folder icon will not be shown, rather a similar icon with a large X is shown. 
  48. This tells you that Public Folder did not install.

  51. Compatibility

  53. The only known incompatibility between Public Folder and other products is
  54. with Apple's CD-ROM drive.  The currently shipping version of this software
  55. can cause Public Folder to crash your Macintosh when others are fetching files
  56. from your machine.  DO NOT create a Public folder on your Macintosh if you are
  57. using the Apple CD-ROM drive.  Using the Public Folder RDEV to access other 
  58. Macintoshes is OK and will not cause a crash.
